Networking In Denver: From The Start

After several years of attending endless networking events hosted by a variety of organizations, Ira Johnson collaborated with Dan Kobler, Partner at Campfire Digital, to create Mile High Young Professionals (MHYP).

 

MHYP launched in 2010 in an effort to provide a comprehensive Young Professional membership. Together, the Luther College alumni from the Midwest, have grown the organization to over 500 members.

 

Today, MHYP is not only a networking organization that connects individuals, but it is also a collaboration hub for all of Denver’s young professional (YP) organizations that have formed throughout chambers, industries, and non-profits.

 

Happy Llama’s Growth Through Networking

From the start, Ira would network 2-3 times a week. “I would meet anywhere from 15-50 people every week!” Ira remembers.

 

It was never just hustle & shake for Ira, though. He took every opportunity to get more involved than just attending events with each networking organization. He volunteered his time and energy to a number of organizations and committees, including:

 

  • Ambassador – Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce
  • Leads Group President – Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce
  • Membership Committee – Downtown Denver Partnership
  • Colorado’s Finest honoree – Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
  • Selection Committee – Colorado Biz 40 Under 40

 

Create Business Relationships

He found a way to connect and form relationships with the people he was networking with instead of just handing out his business card and moving on.

 

Since starting Happy Llama in 2006, his business started by grabbing one-off print projects here and there. Today, he offers comprehensive print consulting and project management to events and organizations across the country, including Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Livwell, Colorado Lottery and Copper Mountain.

 

A New Opportunity

Once MHYP was well on its way in collecting new members and growing its benefits, Ira and Dan saw a new opportunity to connect ALL the YP professionals in Denver through an annual event.

 

In 2011, the Rocky Mountain YP Summit held its first annual one-day conference. With featured speakers, break-out educational sessions and intentional food, the Summit has provided a concentrated space for young professionals to connect, learn and grow.
